“Get wisdom; develop good judgment. Don’t forget my words or turn away from them. Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you. Love her, and she will guard you. Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.”
Proverbs 4:5-7 NLT
“Take your time young man. Don’t you rush to get old.”
⁃ “Mama Used To Say” by Junior (1982)
The quote above is from an old secular song from the 80s. (GOOGLE IT! LoL 😂) I remember as a kid in so many words my grandmother teaching me to slow down and take my time. Faster doesn’t always necessarily mean better. A lot of times that lesson was taught while struggling through some homework as a kid. This young whipper snapper is thinking to myself, “How does she know? It’s been ages since she went to school.” While a lot of things change a lot of things remain the same.
While the information I was struggling to learn was new to me even if it was slightly different she had years of experience to survey it and lead me in the right direction. It wasn’t just knowledge, but it was wisdom. Knowledge is obtaining the information. Wisdom is understanding how to apply that information to have a beneficial effect. Knowledge alone can make you poke out your chest. Wisdom keeps you humble.
Sometimes we can know too much. Nothing wrong with obtaining knowledge, but sometimes we allow the obtaining of knowledge to get us to a place in our minds where we think we’ve arrived. Thus, we use the term “a know it all.” I like to put it that you know too much for your own good.
There’s a saying that, “A wise man knows that he really knows nothing at all.” It doesn’t mean the lack of knowledge. It is that in comparison with all there is to learn you still have a long way to go. It is keeping a posture of continuing to learn. As it pertains to our walk in life, it is having patience and taking time to survey what’s going on around us before jumping to quickly to make a decision.
I understand there are times where situations come up and we have to act quickly. We still should have tested wisdom in reserve to help us in those times. Other times our lack of patience can get us in trouble in situations where if we just took some time to get quiet and just simply ask God. Allowing His Spirit to speak to us. Sometimes we don’t want to do that because we don’t think we’ll like what He has to say. Selah.
I’ll end with this. I’m kind of a comic buff. More so the tv shows and the movies. Not the actual comic books. One of my favorite shows is “The Flash.” There’s an episode where Green Arrow aka Oliver Queen is training Barry. Oliver doesn’t have super speed so like what can he teach the fastest man alive right? He teaches Barry that it’s not all about speed. When running into a crime scene he has the capability to case the whole scene undetected before going in to take down the criminals.
He challenges Barry to run at him while having his bow and arrow aimed at him. Barry runs across the field and runs back at Oliver at full speed. Oliver shoots and Barry catches the arrow. Oliver is wrong right? No. Oliver has 2 remote controlled bows aimed where Barry would stop and shoots 2 arrows in his back. No worries. Barry has healing ability. LoL 😂 Barry has super speed, but Oliver used his wits and experience to overcome the speed he doesn’t have. Allow God’s wisdom at work in you to overcome the obstacles in front of you.
