“By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another.”
Galatians 5:22-26 NRSV
Common vernacular we hear terms like catch the wave or feel the vibe. The wave or the vibe is a feel or a movement you sense coming on. It’s ushering in something new. It’s not necessarily something physically visible or tangible to our natural senses. It’s something you sense and feel on the inside.
I’ve listed to music my whole life. I think I knew this in the back of my mind but it really came to the forefront a few years ago at a Rachelle Ferrell concert. I learned that night why they call it soul music. If you’re not familiar Rachelle Ferrell is an R&B/Jazz singer. One of the most powerful and talented singers I’ve ever heard.
It was an intimate setting in a spot in Annapolis, MD called Ram’s Head. A popular music spot in the area. She came in and blew the roof off. From R&B, Jazz to Gospel. You felt every note down on the inside. It was this night that I really came to the realization of why they call it soul music.
We know that music is something you can feel. This is the wave or the vibe. It’s a movement. It’s not just music that can have this effect. It is something God put on the inside of each and every one of us. We feel it in church when we worship. We feel it when we see that one seen in a movie or tv show. When we find out our best friend is about to propose to his lady. It’s a vibe.
The Bible calls it discernment. I like to call it knowing in our knower. It lets us know that we are more than what we can physically see. It’s always there, but when we’re not saved it’s disconnected from the source, which is God. We spend our lifetime trying to get reconnected. Oh, but it’s a great feeling when we get plugged back into God and become alive again.
Christ is the ultimate vibe. He is the creator of it and is the vibe itself. It’s like He put a tracker on the inside of our hearts and it’s constantly looking for Him. When we feel it in these other things it’s just a shadow of what God really put on the inside of us. It’s a piece of His Holy Spirit.
“then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.”
Genesis 2:7 NRSV
God created Adam and He blew into him the breath of life. It wasn’t just any regular old breath. It was a part of God Himself. Sin broke the connection. Now we must be born again so God can breathe into us again. Now we can feel the real vibe.
