“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””
Acts 1:8 NRSV
This past week Gillette released an ad addressing things like sexual assaults, the Me Too Movement and toxic manhood. Even though they’re simply a shaving company primarily geared towards men, they chose to use their platform to address some things dealing with men handling their manhood correctly.
Gillette surprisingly caught lots of backlash for this ad. Some felt they’re job is just to sell razors and not address these issues. I personally beg to differ. It’s not like they’re selling stamps and came out of nowhere talking about something totally unrelated to their products. Their primary base is men. Why not take time to address issues dealing with men? I mean their slogan is “The best a man can get.”
To me the criticism they received was similar to LeBron James being told to just shut up and dribble when he addressed some political issues. He’s one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He chose to use the influence that he has to relay a positive message to uplift people. That is a greater calling. There is nowhere in the Bible where men or women are called to singers, rappers, professional athletes, or to start a business. God has given all of us the power of influence.
We may not be called to preach or pastor a church, but you still have influence. We may not be put on a stage in front of millions of people, but we still have the ability to influence those around us. Some people become entertainers, professional athletes or politicians. The vocation just sets the stage for them to influence people for the glory of God.
“Whatever your task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord and not for your masters,”
Colossians 3:23 NRSV
The position is just a means to an end for God to get the glory. Christ is in the business of touching lives and we are His tools to do it. Jesus told the disciples to share the gospel in Jerusalem, Judaea, Samaria and the world. That’s your neighborhood, your city, the workplace and wherever else you may go. Be a person of impact. Even if it’s just to one. God gave you gifts, talents, abilities and your quirky personality to be able to connect with people in ways that other people can’t. You’ve been empowered by the Holy Spirit. Now go be effective.
That leads us to our Throwback Theology Song of the Week. A little late, but God is good. LoL. This is from an artist by the name of Cam and is from his 2008 album “Cam the Platform”. The title track “The Platform” is our featured track. If you didn’t watch live tune into the Trackstarz podcast to hear DJ Jeremaya spin this for the Throwback Theology Song of the Day. Until next time… HAPPY MLK DAY!
Peace and blessings,
