As I was preparing to write my next article the usual thought hit me, “What do I write about next?” I’m talking to my lady one day and she says to me, “Why don’t you write about a female rapper?” I go, “You know what? That’s a good point. I’ll file that away and think on that.” As I was pondering that thought, I was struggling. This is why I titled the article WHERE DA LADIES AT!?! It wasn’t so much of thinking of female MC’s as it was thinking there really isn’t many out there right now or at least not a lot who seem to be at the forefront of hip hop culture. That’s Christian or secular. It seemed there was a time in secular hip hop that there was an abundance of ladies representing hip hop culture. It just seems now that it is few and far between. Even back in 2015, there was the Queens Tour featuring V. Rose, HillaryJane, Jasmine Le’Shea and DJ KB. All are very dope artists but they’re not MC’s. Even though they did feature female MC’s on some of the stops of that tour.
Back in the day we had ladies like Queen Latifah, Monie Love, MC Lyte, Yo-Yo and Roxanne Shante just to name a few. Strong black women standing up for the sisteren. I know that’s not a word. LoL. They were at the forefront representing womanhood. As of late, we’ve had artists like Sicily, Angie Rose, Natalie Lauren and Jackie Hill Perry put their stamp on the culture. It just seems though that the sisters fade. I hope to see the ladies make progress in the genre and in the world to the Glory of God. I hope that it’s not that folks think the ladies lack skills, because the ladies I just named have BARS if you haven’t heard their music.
I initially wanted to take y’all back to 2001 to a female MC by the name of Elle Roc. She’s dope and you definitely want to check her out. I’m just going to go back a few years to 2014 to an MC by the name of Shanell Henry fka Mizz Reality. She initially came out in the early 2000’s. Her last album dropped in 2014 and was entitled “By Design.” She released a video for a single called “Crazy” featuring D-Maub. A dope track about living a life crazy about Jesus. That’s what we were designed for, right? In the coming years, I look forward to seeing more females step up to the mic and shine.
