ASHL3Y KING’s debut EP, BUILT From the Deep, is a compelling exploration of resilience and artistry. Hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, ASHL3Y KING brings a rich tapestry of experiences to her music, as highlighted in our recent “Independent Artist Spotlight” interview. I had the pleasure of getting to know ASHL3Y, her music, and her strong and powerful testimony through our time together in that conversation. You may recall that I also wrote her review for her single “FR33” just a few weeks back, which I believe was a good jump start into ASHL3Y’s heart.
The EP opens with “Still Standing,” a track that immediately immerses listeners in ASHL3Y KING’s world. Her soulful vocals and introspective lyrics set the tone for an EP that delves into themes of struggle, growth, and empowerment.
“Without You” was my favorite. To me it stood out because of the hard-hitting beat, lyrics, and man-o-man, the feature with Jae Fresco. Together the two really complimented one another. The production was both polished and raw, allowing ASHL3Y’s voice to shine through with authenticity.
To me, “148” pays homage to the to her Memphis roots. A song with a gritty hook that you can ride to. With me, you can’t go wrong in my book with “chopped and screwed”.
“Mark 8:36” serves as the EP’s transition song. To me, this song sets up a strong close to first half, but serves as smooth transition to the the second half which gives us more of an R&B vibe. Nygel Yancet brings a smooth soulful feel with his vocals. Together, the uplifting chorus and dynamic arrangement of the song showcases their versatility as both vocalists and songwriters.
I could tell ASHL3Y put forth tremendous effort to give the EP a strong close with “Thru the Fire“. In this song she seems to culminate the entire project, what it’s about, and how God brought her through the deep!
Throughout BUILT From the Deep, ASHL3Y demonstrates a remarkable ability to convey deep emotion and connect with her audience. Her fusion of R&B, soul, and contemporary influences creates a sound that is uniquely her own.
This EP is not just a collection of songs; it’s a narrative journey that invites listeners to reflect, heal, and find strength in vulnerability. ASHL3Y KING’s debut is a promising start to what is sure to be a noteworthy career in music.
