Take me back, I wanna go BACK! Take me back to when R&B actually stood for Rhythm and Blues, and we felt it! It’s been since I can say I’ve had that experience with mainstream music but thank God we have other alternatives now.
I recently sat down with multi-talented artist, “Hmbld” (pronounced Hum-ble-d) for my “Independent Artist Spotlight” series interview linked HERE. He let me preview “No Baggage Fees” early, which was a true honor. My wife loved it. I usually play the songs I review late at night when I can play it on multiple times without my thoughts being interrupted. My approach is a 3-step rinse and repeat process. The first playback is for the beat, the second is for the lyrics, and the last is to observe delivery as a whole.
After the third playback my wife walked into the room and said “I like that beat, who is that”? I smiled and said, “the next person you should probably add to your playlists”. She agreed!
When the song first comes on you hear the beat drop and it’s incredible! It you set me up to really vibe with the song. I loved the hook also. It was very catchy and it sets up the song up for the play on words that you hear throughout the song.
There is a bridge just before the first verse that I loved! It set the song up for anticipation and the verse did not disappoint! Hmbld came with the bars, which was also complimentary to his flow and the tone of the song. Verse after verse the song just continued to progress. I settled on the last verse being my favorite. Hmbld did a great job setting it up and it had one of my favorite line in that verse ” All brakes, no gas, no play-play. I was dead in my sin, that’s a cold case” Sheesh! That line was fire! After that I was like “I’m done, lock it up!” The song gets a 10 out of 10 in my book! I urge you to go and listen to it and make your own assessment!
