I recently sat down with Zay Honcho for another installment of the “Independent Artist Spotlight” series. I was really excited to speak with him about his album, “WAR BABY”. I listened album to prior to our interview so that I could get a good understanding of his heart and more of his story. I can’t tell you how excited that made me. I’m always eager to talk to the artists about their testimony because I believe it reveals so much about who they were before Christ, who they are now, and the old sin that was washed away. It also speaks to Jesus and His miraculous wonder-working power that works in us all. For Zay, this is his first full album release since he quit secular music and fully gave his life to Jesus.
“WAR BABY” is a redemption story about how a walk with the Lord can be transformative in so many ways. With 7 tracks in total, “WAR BABY” is a melodic masterpiece. It begins with an intro where Zay Honcho makes a fantastic case for Christ and what it looks like when we choose to follow Him. His flow and delivery are complimentary to the beat. The project made good use of Jazz undertones throughout the first three songs on the album that essentially features beats that utilize wind instruments and drum kits.
Midway through the album, the production switches to more of “anthem style” beats with songs like “HERE I AM” and “I AM A SON”. The turn-up continues with the last two tracks, JAMES & JOHN and EXODUS. I could tell Zay was most likely looking to be strategic with the flow of the album. I love his intentionality there. A big part of the success of an album and how it comes off to the listener is the arrangement of the tracks. I love how it started out at a slower pace and then picked up. It seems obvious that Zay was looking to hit us with a different mood as the album progressed.
From start to finish, the entire album is laced with bible-based theology that reels you in to help you understand the heart and sentiment of the true God of the Bible. Zay Honcho delivers the Word of God and tells an incredible story about his life’s journey and the man God has made him out to be. So much can be said about this project, but you’ll have to listen and form your own opinion. It was easy to listen to the whole way through. I personally recommend that you go check out “WAR BABY’ and also stream the full compliment of Zay Honcho’s catalog on his Spotify artist profile linked below.
