Broward county representatives and Hilltop Society members Justcallmedt and A-Dub White released a surprise mixtape called ‘Community Service.’ This project is a play on words because community service is work that is done for the good of the community and not for profit. And this recent mixtape is just that. The two emcees hopped on several popular mainstream beats in the classic jacking for beats style, but these brothers put their own unique spin on it.
While the music may sound familiar, the two artists make sure to differentiate themselves with their lyricism and message. The project starts with Justcallmedt spitting over a beat that featured a sample from the Clark Sisters that he knows he’ll never get cleared. There’s something about spitting over industry beats that brings out the best in an artist, and the two Florida emcees are no exception.
The pair of emcees shine on this tape as they drop a verse or two over the mainstream records. For most of the tape you hear their voices in isolation except for the last two tracks that find both emcees on the songs. A-Dub White kills it on tracks like “What’s Popping” and “Family Ties,” but his verse on “Pipe Down” really stood out.
He talked about his friend and fallen Hilltop Society member Professor Biz for a few bars, and you can hear how much Biz impacted him and how mischief he is missed. In hip hop vulnerability isn’t often encouraged, but on this soulful beat A-Dub White took a second to reveal his thoughts within his safe space of music.
The bars and quotable lines are in abundance throughout this tape, so make you give it multiple listens. This mixtape is a pleasant surprise and a wonderful showcase of the talented emcees’ talents and capabilities.
