The AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) hate has always been an issue but 2020 and 2021 really brought it to the surface. In the midst of police brutality, the AAPI hate has also flared the tension that exists between African and Asian Americans. Uzuhan didn’t want to touch on these heavy topics but he decided to do so anyway with his latest single “Ashes” featuring Sarah Kang. This song was produced by Samuel Ock and the artwork was designed by DEKI. This single takes an honest look at the indifference that people have towards those not in their people group.
His lines, “This scarcity mindset about to kill us all/ while the goofy ones weaponize the Word of God” resonate in a real way. Uzuhan also addresses those who want to act like they want to help but are really only hijacking the cause to get more press and clout for themselves. In his own words the song is, “A rallying cry for us to remember humanity. Not targeted towards one community, but a plea to all peoples who allow lack of proximity to fuel their ignorance.”
His last verse asks, “Is it justice for all or just the optics?” He really gets into those that use the struggle of AAPI for their own marketing schemes to add money to their pockets. Uzuhan says a lot in this three and a half minute song, and you definitely need to listen to it a few times to catch everything he’s saying. Hopefully, “Ashes” can be the start of a much larger conversation that needs to be had about the indifference and ignorance in this country and this world.
