What’s going on everyone!! Man, this week, I’m going to keep being honest and real. I want to talk a little in depth about pride. When I think of pride, I think about hubris (having excessive pride), rather, thinking too highly of ourselves. The dictionary defines pride as, “a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.”
As true as this definition is about pride, I think it causes us to miss the other part of what pride is. It’s also thinking in a self centered manner, even when it comes to negative thoughts. When we think too much about our problems and how “bad” we are, we not only lose sight of the people that care deeply about us, but more importantly, we lose sight of the God that died for every negative thought that the enemy tries to plant in our minds.
I think of a couple lines from KB, who said, “self pity, it’s really pride it’s self really”. I can’t agree with this anymore because self pity focuses on the failures that we have caused, and with that our mind will go to diminishing the grace and mercy we have been extended. I’ve always heard the statement “get over yourself”, and that statement is so true!! We live in a culture that is so focused on self and presenting a perfect image, but it’s not perfect. We need to really be okay with exposing our flaws, but not to the point of neglecting others and the God who has made us righteous.
Much Love,
Ryan W.
