RHETORIC 2018 | Michael Nelder – “Dirty Prayers”

This piece, “Dirty Prayers” from poet Michael Nelder closed out #RHETORIC2018. The piece was so moving, as he delicately shared the confessions of his prayer life with the audience. This piece is a suggestion to critically think about the prayers we pray on an individual level and what they say about our hearts. It is a beautiful examination of how gratitude can inform our prayers.

He wanted to challenge the notion that prayer is just about asking God for things, as well as encourage hearers to think about who we are in the context of American society and our privilege that allows us to pray for certain things other people don’t have the privilege of thinking about.
