Isaiah 9:6-7 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Your desire for right rule is and will be ultimately realized on the broad shoulders of JESUS and not the scrawny shoulders of man. This realization is experienced in an “already but not yet” way.
As the aforementioned scripture reads, there is no boundary to the reign of JESUS. There have been great governments throughout the course of history, ruled by man, but those empires were not limitless. The Assyrian Empire lasted 272 years. The Babylonian Empire lasted 73 years, while some say the Roman Empire lasted more than 500 years. Furthermore, United States Presidents can only serve 8 years. Chinese Presidents can only serve 10 years. Dictators serve until they are overthrown or dead. But the King of kings and Lord of lords reigns forever—”the increase of HIS government and of peace there will be no end.”
The Prophet Daniel states, “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever (2:44).”
Other kingdoms will end; will rise and fall, but HIS kingdom will stand forever. The benefits from your president, prime minister, or dictator will run out after a time, but with CHRIST those benefits will last forever. HIS right rule will last forever.
The United States is only so big, and it may have a few military bases in other countries, but you still need a passport to travel to those other countries. You are not a citizen of those countries. We are ambassadors now; aliens and pilgrims now, but then we will be citizens of a heavenly country that has no borders. Citizens of a heavenly country whose ruler’s reign will never end.
If HIS reign never ends, that means that peace will never end. Justice will never end. Righteousness will never end. We must know this!
There is a government for us to really be concerned with. There is a government for us to really do some research on. There is a Ruler that we really need to know HIS policies and that for which HE stands. There is a government for us to really get worked up about. I am not saying that we cannot be involved with or concerned about our government here; as a matter of fact GOD has set some guidelines as it concerns how HE really wants us to engage with those in authority here; I’m just saying that there is a government that takes priority over any government, and that’s the government that on the shoulders of JESUS.
