As we look at several movies, TV shows and listen to some people around us, they have an unusual label or thought that marriage is “life sucking.” This term simply means that your spouse takes all of the good/positive things about you and drains them from you. They make jokes that your spouse could possibly suck away your soul itself. This mentality is implying that spouses come to marriages to be selfish and take the spirit away from their spouse. Even though many of those movies, shows and people’s stories can have funny points, that is not the intent of marriage.
We can see through the bible that marriage is actually life-giving. The world says that woman suck and drain men of their fun and wallets, but the bible tells us in Proverbs 18:22 that “He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the lord.” Clearly, this verse shows us that marriage actually improves life and increases goodness and favor from God. The world says that men suck and drain women’s patience and happiness by being immature and cheaters, but Genesis 2:24 tells us that “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” As we see from this verse, God intended man to leave a life from his parents (including others around him-friends, etc) and give his life to his wife.
Don’t let the media fool you. Marriage is not life sucking. Don’t let anyone make you believe that. If someone around you is saying or feeling that, then they aren’t living it the way God intended it. Anything given to us from God is always going to be life-giving.
