TZ: Tell us a little about the motivation behind “the Re-education of Lauren Michel.”

LM: I obviously had a lot of inspiration from the great Lauryn Hill and The Miseducation. That album was written at a pivotal time in her life and she wanted to share it and depict her emotions for others. Some of the songs on my project were written over the course of 3 years because it took me awhile to really experience an intense life change. I wanted to do my absolute best to express some of the emotions and struggles that I felt along that journey of coming into myself and what better way to do that than through music.

TZ: My favorite song from the project was “Life Changes.” Could you tell us the heart behind the song and why you chose to rap the whole thing with that sound effect on your voice?

LM: Life Changes is a very important song to me. Throughout the tape there are a few songs this one included are directed to “Lox” or the girl that I used to be. I chose to use the deep voice on this one because it isn’t supposed to be me speaking but my conscience screaming at me. That is why if you listen closely you can hear my actual voice as a layer under the deeper vocals. The conscience is pointing out my weaknesses even when I think that I am all good and everything is fine but in actuality I’m still really failing. I love the part in the hook that says “I’m still lost, I’m still here…” because there was a time that I continued to circle back to old habits that I felt were impossible to break and I had to claw my way out of those things. Even though it is a remake of Casey Veggies song “Life Changes,” it goes so well with my story. Because I was at a point where I knew my life had changed to a certain extent on the surface, but I still had such a long way to go internally.

TZ: Tell us about the Good Religion contest and your experience out in Cali.

LM: Cali was amaaaazzziiiinnnnggg. I have been to LA before but never San Diego and I was blown away. The Dream Junkies are some of the best people I have ever had the opportunity to spend time with. They were so inviting and willing to share their knowledge with me as long as I wanted to ask questions. I met so many awesome artist and people in general, it was very eye-opening and refreshing to experience a group of friends like the Kings Dream crew. They are all grinding and doing life together, which is just awesome to see and experience.

TZ: Has a co-sign from the good people at King’s Dream opened any doors?

LM: It definitely has opened a ton of doors for me. Not just with getting more plays on SoundCloud and views on social media, but I was able to connect with a lot of other artists and producers as well.
