Familiarity can kill relationships over time. This happens with marriages, parent/child relationships, friends, and church family. We can get so used to a person and know so much about them, we forget about that special treasure within them that we found so special. That is the valuable part of a person we can forget to be appreciative of.
When you meet your future spouse for the first time, there is a desire to see them again and again. You make dates and get excited as that time gets closer. This is the magical part of the relationship that everyone enjoys and eventually has them wanting to get married. The unfortunate reality is, most marriages lose that spark because the couple gets so used to each other that they don’t look forward to being around each other as much. This is why going on dates as a married couple is so important.
This also happens within a church family as well. Everyone has a special gift that God has imparted in us. It usually shines more when we first learn to use it or when others first recognize it. The most commonly noticed gift is a musical talent of some sort. After a while, we just expect it and no longer hold it as treasure. Pastors have a gift to share the gospel in a relatable way to their congregation. The church expects him to do so in the best way possible every week and if they don’t then they are let down. It becomes an expectation instead of a gift given to us through the Holy Spirit.
There is a saying, “expectations ruin relationships.” We have to be careful not to create expectations of people’s gifts. We often become so used to being given gifts that we forget to be truly thankful. This is true for Christmas, birthdays, and other holidays. We should always be thankful for the physical gifts we are given but even more thankful for the spiritual gifts that are shared with us as well. Give thanks to those around you and don’t look past those special qualities that each person has.
